Aim
This course aims to summarise information on the newer drug treatments of hyperglycaemia in people with type 2 dibetes, in the context of the recent NICE guidance. For each class of agent the following is presented:
- An outline of the mode of action
- Pharmacokinetics
- Indications and contraindications
- Efficacy
- Safety
- Monitoring requirements
- Interactions with other drugs.
In addition, this review gives guidance on the place of self-monitoring of blood glucose in patients with type 2 diabetes.
Intended learning outcomes
After completing this course you should have an understanding of aspects of diabetes management using:
- Thiazolidnediones
- Gliptins
- GLP-1 analogues
- Postprandial glucose regulators.
